Will Spurs fans support Croatia and Luka Modric at Euro 2008?

030608_Modric.jpgWe might not have the likes of Paul Robinson, Jonathan Woodgate and Jermaine Jenas to cheer on at Euro 2008 but at least that means we can throw our weight behind the one Spurs player who will be flaunting his skills in Austria and Switzerland.

It's lucky we signed Luka Modric really, otherwise we'd really be struggling to enjoy the tournament without England there. Mind you, at least we should have a chance to run the rule over some potential new stars for the ranks at White Hart Lane.

I am sure Juande Ramos will be watching with great interest, much like most of the Premier League's gaffers. But fingers crossed the end of the Euros should see us bolster our squad with a couple more of the decent talents on show.

And let's hope our £15.8m record signing will give our rivals something to be envious of. It's for this reason that we here at Spurs Pies will be backing Modric and Croatia during Euro 2008 and urge all supporters to do the same.

It's a mixed emotion really given the fact they put our own national team out of the contest during the qualifiers but they are the closest we can come to loyal support with the hand that's been dealt us.

Modric admits they'll be many looking his way to deliver. He said: "I understand a lot of people will be watching me from this point. I spent a few days in London when I signed for Tottenham and a lot of their fans came up to me and said they now had a reason to watch the European finals.

"But I don't have to feel the pressure. I'm a stubborn person and I think that helps in some ways. I've got to this stage by playing my game, so there is no reason to change."

It's funny really. When Cristiano Ronaldo shattered England's hopes in the World Cup with that penalty, he became a figure of hate. He's now worshipped as a God by Manchester United fans and has won over the rest of us. Who wouldn't want to see him in our own line-up.

Maybe Luka Modric can do the same this summer. He helped knock us out but perhaps he can show enough skill, pace and trickery on the Euro pitches to make the whole of the Premier League sit up and take notice at what they'll be facing in a Lilywhite shirt come August.

Modric added: "Why can't we reach the final? It is hard to make big statements now because we have to show how good we are. But I believe in us."

And with words to make every Tottenham supporter in the land smile, he says: "I know all about the history of the club; Ardiles, Hoddle, Waddle, Gascoigne, Lineker, Klinsmann. They also had a manager who wanted me a lot. He turned Sevilla into a giant and he can do the same for Tottenham."

Well Luka, let's hope you're right on both those predictions.

What do you think? Will Luka Modric set Euro 2008 alight? Can Juande Ramos turn Spurs into a giant as he says? Is he a reason for us all to back Croatia? Who will you support at the tournament and why? Post a comment below...

Nope, the Croats have largely in their history been anti-semitic in the extreme so there's no way I'd support them. Don;t get me wrong, I'm not blaming all Croats just the small minority of thm that stilll find it funny to show support to the nazi regime back in the 1930's.

Glad we got Modric though... :)

"our £15.8m record signing"

i like how you've seemingly refused to acknowledge Dareen Bent's existance

Fair point Kieran - should be "joint record signing" - but let's hope this one is better value for money

I'm a Croat and I have no problems with Jewish people. The hardcore Croats fought with the germans because they were trying to wipe out serbs they were fighting at the time IQATL.I don't know one person who is anti semitic, but I know hundreds who dislike serbs. The croat supporters formed a swastika to taunt fascist Italians in a game a while back and people thought we were doing it because we were Nazis.Hello, we were taking the mick out of italians who do nazi salutes every week.Peace.

Yes I will be supporting Luka and Croatia in the euro touney, as it has always been club before country for me, and i want to support our players in all of their internationals, no matter which country they play for. Just because they are English doesnt mean that i have to give two s*&% how idiots like Rooney are doing. Good Luck Luka!
