Should Spurs expect six points from their first two Premier League games?

Spurs_Badge.jpgThe fixture list for next season is out and all eyes are now on Saturday August 13 when Tottenham open the new campaign with an away trip to Middlesbrough. Gareth Southgate's men are always strong at home but any new-look Spurs side should be expected to begin their travels with a win.

But then we all thought that last year didn't we, as Martin Jol and his players set off for a early kick-off against Sunderland. But the Premier League new boys proved a match for us and so began a rather lacklustre league campaign.

We face Sunderland at home a week later in our second game of the season. Roy Keane will bolster his squad this summer, but again, I can't see any reason why Juande Ramos cannot begin 2008/09 with six points in the bag and an unbeaten run.

Sadly, we make the trip to Stamford Bridge next to face Big Phil Scolari's new-look Chelsea. It has to be an ideal time to play the Blues. They'll still be bedding in with a change of gaffer and a whole roster of different stars. I'd much rather tackle them away then than wait for things to settle down and Chelsea to hit their stride. I fancy a draw for that one.

So we could end August with seven points from nine, a very respectable run underway and Aston Villa (h), Wigan Athletic (h), Portsmouth (a), Hull City (h), Stoke City (a) and Bolton (h) to come. There's at least 12 points there, if not all 18!

Ok, I may be looking at things far too optomistically but as we go into October with matches against Arsenal and Liverpool, I can see us sitting high in the Premier League with at least 20 points from 27. Do that and while I still see a fourth place next season as highly unlikely, a top six finish - which has to be the aim - should begin to look within reach.

What do you think? Can Spurs get off to a decent start looking at their fixtures? Post a comment below...

deffently YESS ! if were wanting top 4, games like our first 2 have to be wins no matter what ! also we shudnt look at our fixtures and see arsenal united chelsea and liverpool as a lost because if were going to battle for champs league were going to have to get results against them simple as ! COYS!

Have to think that you are being VERY optimistic to think that we will have 20 out of 27 going into October....It was our home form that took us to the 2 5th place finishes and starting at Boro will be dodgy to say the least.
On paper,we are a far superior squad to them, but we were against Sunderland last season and look what happened there!!!!!
Of course I have to believe that we will win all 38(deluded Spurs fans)games, but to be realistic about it,I think the 1st 3 games will bring 4 points out of 9. Probably putting us mid table AGAIN.....
I know that with Modric and Gio and maybe 2 or 3 others to come in,we should be an improved side, but you can't expect everything to gel straight away, after all,you have said yourself that we have a good chance against Chelski because they will still be bedding in the new players, well, the same will apply to us...
Anyway, BEST OF LUCK TO THE BOYS!!!!!!!!!

The first games of the season are always the least predictable, both teams have not been playing competivie football for a while and things can still be a little rusty.... I know if we want to break top 4 we need results, But I dont want to put presure on the lads and will be happy if we could remain unbeaten in the first 3 games.. I think thats would be a good start, that would be a min 3 points and if we could get even take a win at home we could take 5 points from the first 3 games. I think that would be very good start....

I would take as an excellent start, 1st game away draw, second home win and third an away draw.... That would be a top start and would be in line with the type of season we want, Top 4 fnish.... COYS

Well, last year, I said the start to the campaign looked quite promising - but that we could fall flat on our face...and we did.
So, with the same provision, my immediate impression was that, excluding the ArseScum derby (as game 10), of the first 9, all are winnable, with the exception of Chelsea away. And let's be honest, here, we are talking interms of recent form and quality of squad - not on what could happen or on what I want to happen.
As 'it's a funny old game' we could win at the Bridge and lose home to the maccums.
That said, yeah, I think that is fair for an opening run of fixtures!
