Is Sir Alex Ferguson right - would Gazza be fine if he'd have snubbed Spurs for Manchester United?

040608_Gascoigne.jpgSir Alex Ferguson, a man I have huge respect for, seems to think Paul Gascoigne's problems could have been avoided if he'd have signed for Man United back in 1988 instead of moving to Tottenham.

In an interview screened on Sky Sports last night, the tough Scot said London is a hard place for a young player to come to and admitted moving to N17 as a 19-year-old from
Newcastle might not have been the best thing.

He said: "Could I have helped him? Well I think about what we would have taken away - we'd have taken London out of the road for him. We had Bobby Charlton, a Geordie, Bryan Robson, a Geordie, Steve Bruce, a Geordie.

"We had a structure of players who could have helped him and I think it would have given him some discipline. Maybe it would have helped him, too."

It's so depressing to see the state Gazza is in right now. A prolific footballer and Hotspur Hero, he has sunk to an all-time low and it's unclear exactly what could turn his life around right now.

His battle with alcohol is well documented but it seems his troubles now stem deeper than just drink after he was sectioned under the Mental Health Act.

Another former White Hart Lane legend Gary Mabbutt gets it right when he says Paul must get some professional help to avert a "a serious tragedy".

He told BBC Radio 5 Live: "Paul is not a celebrity drunk. The fact of the matter is he's suffering from very serious illnesses. These illnesses mean that he honestly believes that his condition is nowhere near as grave as it really is."

He added: "Paul does have these self-destructive urges, which do put him in a life-threatening situation, and if we're not careful this could lead to a serious tragedy.

"All that we're asking is to try and find a way to be able to contain Paul so that he can undergo this treatment and rehabilitation to give him the best chance to overcome his very serious problems."

Whatever the answer to Gazza's problems, I pray it is found soon. He is one of my all-time favourite players to have graced the pitch at White Hart Lane and I am sure that view will be echoed by many readers.

Whether Sir Alex is right, I don't know, perhaps a tougher line might have ironed out some of the kinks in his personality but there's no point reflecting on the past. Gazza's future has to be the priority and I really hope he can find the inner strength he used to show on our turf to get his life back on an even keel.

All of us associated with Spurs Pies wish him well - Gazza, you are and always will be a Tottenham legend!

What do you think? Did coming to London so young set Paul Gascoigne on a rocky road? How can he now get back on his feet? Post a comment below...

Yeah he's right, why be like Gazza when you can be like Best.

Probably nothing would have changed - George Best played for Man Utd and drink eventually killed him!. Football and everything around it has caused alot of the problems in recent years take for example
Merson,Adams,Bowyer,Barton(currently in prison) all money high life etc takes its toll. However i surpose you could argue gazza is lsightly different in that e cant seem to live without football however only he can get himself out of this mess then maybe someone will get him into coaching etc

Oh yes,Manchester united took such great care with George Best.

Posted by: bleachedweasel | June 4, 2008 11:22 AM

You guys are missing the point, Best was never managed under Fergie, If Gazza had gone to united I cant see Fergie letting him get away with the partying and boozing Gazza was known for (the start of his problems) How many players in the last 21 years have got away with being a drunk at united. I believe that with fellow geordie's around him, closer to home and family and under the supervision for the best manager to ever grace the english isles... Gazza would have had a better chance... albeit he may have stil ended up this way.... but then again he may not have.

In 1998? Don't you mean 1988?

Cheers Dever!

obviously Alec "bottle of Scotch a game" Ferguson would of been better for Gazza, they could have got pi**ed together at half time.

Posted by: Stan | June 4, 2008 11:42 AM

Two words. Lee Sharpe

Posted by: Bruce Grove | June 4, 2008 11:42 AM

haha, sometimes i think Sir Alex just runs out of things to say, how can he say he would have saved him from his demons, the Hairdryer perhaps? the double has obviously gone to his head to come out and say this, and it undermines spurs fc

Fergie never let his truely talented players go down that path, he always stuck by what he considered his best players like cantona, giggs etc. Sharp was a very good player but he was no Gazza and therefore scarifised at the expense of Gigg's future... now look at what he achieved.. and giggs loved his partying too!!!

complete twaddle.hes just sore that gazza didnt play for him.it was a sign of the times drinking so i suppose next he,ll say that tony adams would have changed as well.i hope spurs/newcastle find gazza a coaching role for the youth set up or something .its a shame to see a fallen idol.

He's full of it as usual. Every thing sir Alex says is a double edged sword. He's just trying to plant a subliminal message to future young targets that they should fear the big smoke if they take their career seriously, and that only his ever lovin' arms can protects them from the evils of booze and drugs. "Cos Man U never miss-behave themselves or get out of control do they? Just ask the staff at the Great John Street hotel and the fella that was due to give Rio a drugs test.

Sounds like a combination of sour grapes for not signing Gazza and the thoughts of a man drunk on own his self-importance. Alcoholism is not a discplinary problem as he suggests but rather a deep-seated/sometimes genetic problem. Like anyone who ever watched Gazza at The Lane, I hope to God that he pulls through.

There still have been more stability at ManUtd compared to Spurs or Gazza. Just look at Giggs. Even as a Spurs supported, I think he might be correct BUT I do enjoy the fact that Gazza did join us rather than them.

Instead of slating Fergie why not point your fingers at Kenny Sansom. On the News last night talking about the sad state of Gazza's plight I thought why? All became clear this morning plugging his book on the radio talking of his alcohol nightmare! He used the poor fella as a vehicle to plug his book but its much easier to have a go at Fergie eh!

Best, Whiteside, McGrath, Robson - ManUre stopped them lot from drinking.

But then you just have to look at Fergie's nose and hear him slur his words to see it's just the ramblings of someone who has had one too many.

Fergie forgets he as well as the press at the time said Venibles was mad to pay 2million for a 19 year old,so he would NEVER have been at manchester.Gazza would have been fine under venibles but was sold to Lazio shortly after the FA cup final. He never really had a good Mentor in his life long enough to matter.Fergie also forgets mental illness can strike anyone and at anytime so could be related to anything, fergie should stick to football!!

AS USUAL FERGIE LOVES TO HEAR HIM SELF TALK HE FAILED WITH ROBSON ,WHITESIDE , MCGRATH , AND LORD KNOW`S HOW MANY MORE GUYS WHO HAD TO BE SHOVED OUT QUIETLY FROM OLD TRAFFORD BECAUSE OF DRINK RELATED PROBLEMS , HE WOULD MAKE YOU BELIEVE HE NOT ONLY KNOWS THAT HE TALKS SENSE ALL THE TIME BUT HE ALSO OWNS MAN UTD AND THE AMERICAN DIRECTORS ARE IN HIS POCKET " A LOAD OF BULL FERGIE DO YOU OWN WRIGLEYS TOO"

Posted by: JD | June 4, 2008 1:55 PM

Don't forget Ronnie Wallwork, one of Fergie's boys, attacked a referee then got stabbed in a nightclub. Not all Man U players turn out to be cleaner than clean.

Posted by: lee rocker | June 4, 2008 2:53 PM

Fergie forgets that at the time Spurs had Waddle & Fenwick - 2 north east lads. Not to mentioned great pros like Paul Allen & Gary Mabbutt - Lineker joined a year later too.

At the end of the day, at that time Spurs were probably a more attractive proposition.

Bitterness & Ego talking from Fergie.

Arrogance and ignorance in perfect harmony. Dangerously big headed hypothetical nonsense. How can ferguson make such a prediction? He's not the omnipotent fortune telling psychiatrist he thinks he is. Watch out jeremy kyle, here comes fergie, handing out directions to the promised land of the righteous. Perhaps the NHS should employ him to go round hospitals laying hands on the sick. Praise jesus.

Of course - and as I sit here, I look out of my window and Fergy walks gently across the surface of the sea.
Ahoy, wait a moment, nary is it sea any longer for FergSUS has transformed the water into frothing red wine (and raised some sailors from their watery graves for goodly measure)!

Posted by: Sean | June 4, 2008 4:07 PM

Hey! Lord Fergie. You must be constantly bored as you seem to have the need to try to justify yourself every week with some new inane or stupid rant! Never mind Gazza, it's "lovely boy" Ronaldo you need to worry about. Let's see if you can "walk the talk" with that one Pal!

Posted by: Robert | June 4, 2008 5:48 PM

It would have made no difference;like hancock, elvis and other so talented peoplen poor gazza allways had a built in self distruct button & he had geordie mates at spurs e.g. Waddle with home he stayed with for a time
